Internet Protocol Television (IPTV)

What is IPTV and how does it work? Find out more in this video.

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) delivers video and audio content over a managed computer network based on the Internet protocol (IP). This can include a private local area network (LAN), a wide area network (WAN), or a managed service provider network.

Unlike streaming over or Internet or over the top (OTT), IPTV can deliver live video over a multicast stream. This allows multiple devices to immediately access a single live stream at any time.

Typical enterprise applications include live video streaming for signage within airports, distribution of television services within hotels, video security, video displays at sports stadiums, and internal communications. As IPTV streams can be restricted to a private network, it offers greater levels of security than Internet streaming.

For consumers, broadband providers can offer IPTV services with a similar viewing experience as with cable or satellite television. Access can be restricted to subscribers with an IPTV set-top-box or via a secure mobile app that supports multicast or that can link to a set-top-box over WiFi.
